Nine Common Applications for Treated Pilings

James HariMarch 28, 2019March 29, 2019

Any treated piling will be resistant to rot, water or insect damage, fungal decay and therefore they can be used in many places as compared to any natural wood, which is likely to get damaged and decay quickly and cause structural problem.

The pressure treated lumber can always be used either on land or in water. Also, they are available in variety of sizes, in round cross-section as well as square cross-section, both with and without tapering.

Following are just some of the projects where such treated pilings are normally used for:

  • Pole barns

The larger-diameter end of wooden butt is usually buried few feet inside the ground, in any traditional pole barn. Also, the hole will be filled with gravel, soil, or concrete.

  • Fences or corrals

In order to build fences corrals for any property treated pilings of different diameters are usually used by using piling of larger diameter that are driven in the ground or buried, to create posts.

  • Roof beams

In roof structures, a common area where these treated pilings are used. They are used for rafters or the ridge beam in utility buildings, rustic homes or barns where the wood can be left exposed.

  • House piers

If the soil conditions prevent use of concrete footing, beam and pier construction is usually used. Wooden piers can be driven in the ground, buried or drilled, leaving anywhere from few inches to more than a few feet above the ground.

  • Decks or porches

For construction of porches or decks on house pilings, especially the ones with square cross-section, often are used. Poles can be buried or driven inside the ground and connected horizontally to the beams.

  • Pier pilings or dock

For docks located on lakes, rivers, or ocean treated piles are commonly used. They are treated by using special marine coatings for constant immersion inside the water, and also damage due to salt exposure.

  • Bulkheads

Along shorelines, where it must control erosion, bulkheads can often be found. They are also called retaining walls, particularly when they can be found on land, as bulkhead can prevent soil to fall down a hill or slope.

  • Poles for telephone or utility

Utility poles treated pilings are used to run telephone, electric cable lines to various places.

  • Light poles

Like utility poles, these treated wood pilings also are used for light poles, to illuminate store fronts, walkways and parking lots.
